诗歌背景：
《奇妙的故事》由Rowley写词，Bilhorn谱曲。这首诗歌收录于《福音诗集》，后来又收录在新版的《圣歌独唱曲集》。歌曲写于1886年大复兴风潮中，当年Rowley在麻省第一浸信会已牧会三年，他曾提及写这歌的经过：我当年有一位得力助手，他叫Bilhorn，来自瑞士，是年轻的音乐家。某个主日晚间崇拜后，Bilhorn对我说：“你可以写诗让我谱曲啊。”当晚我脑海突然出现《奇妙的故事》一诗。原来诗歌的起句是：怎不唱这奇妙故事？后来1887年的诗集编辑把这一句改为：我要唱奇妙的故事。
本诗词作者Francis H. Rowley，1854年7月25日生于纽约 Hilton，后来成为浸信会牧师，在东部麻州、宾州及伊州牧会。
本诗曲作者Peter Bilhorn 1865 年生于伊州 Mendota，八岁丧父，被迫辍学帮助家计生活，十五岁随家人迁居芝加哥，此时显露其歌唱天赋。廿岁归主，奉献其生命，才华为主使用。他设计一种折迭式，只重十六磅之轻便风琴，以作为街头布道的利器。1887年开始大量生产，此种风琴遂普遍在全世界被采用。一生共作了二千首圣诗，本诗乃其最有名的一首。
