亨德尔（George Frideric Handel）在欧洲音乐发展史中，具有特殊地位，参与创造巴洛克时期最灿烂的音乐文化。亨德尔1685年生于德国哈勒城，自幼对音乐有浓厚兴趣。六岁时就能熟练地演奏管风琴，少年时代开始学习作曲。十七岁从法学院毕业后未从事有关工作，却成了教堂的风琴师。1703年迁居德国的威尼斯（汉堡）。1706至1710年间，他游历意大利各大音乐中心，创作热情得着鼓舞。1710年到了英国，参加皇家歌剧院的创建工作，后更成为该院的领导人。但晚年患上眼疾，甚至双目失明，1759年受难节在英国逝世。

亨德尔（George Frederick Handel）在他的歌剧事业失败后，情绪低落，了无生趣；正在他觉得生不如死时，收到一首友人的诗，描述主耶稣被人藐视、厌弃、被钉十架及复活，其中有一句“我知道我的救赎主活着”，深深地安慰了他！在感动中，似乎天门为他敞开，他听到“哈利路亚”的曲调，于是他把这诗写成“弥赛亚”神曲，在短短的廿四天内完成了这旷世巨作。
