诗歌背景资料：
查理卫斯理（Charles Wesley,1707-1788,）和华兹（Isaac Watts）是英国教会中最伟大的圣诗作者。前者被称为“诗中之圣”，后者被尊为“圣诗之父”。每一个诗人的诗歌，都有他独特点。查理的圣诗是表达他个人在主前的属灵经历和灵感。他一共写了六千多首圣诗，是福音圣诗的先锋。1738年5月21日，查理为庆祝他属灵生日周岁纪念，作了这首十八节的诗，命名为“归主周年”。同年他遇到一位莫拉维亚（Moravian）宣教士浦彼得（Peter Bohler），他对查理说：“如果我有一千个舌头，我都要用它们来赞美主。”因此查理就把这首诗名改为《万口欢唱》（O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing），并由其兄将它改为十一节。这是卫理宗派第一首流行的圣诗。另有一个传说关于这首诗名，有一天查理看完英国一场盛大的足球比赛后，当球员们列队经过街道时，万人空巷向他们喝采，当时他心中有深刻的感触，这些人向世上的虚荣喝采，而救主却少有人赞美，于是写了这首《愿我有千万口舌来赞美主！》
查理著名的圣诗有：《神圣主爱》（Love Divine,All Loves Excelling），《天使报信》（Hark！The Herald AngelsSing），《基督耶稣今复生》（Christ the Lord is Risen Today），《奇异的爱》（And Can It Be That I Should Gain）等。
这首圣诗有三个曲调，最常用的是德国人葛拉撒（Carl Gotthelf Glaser,1784-1829）所谱，他是一位钢琴、小提琴、及声乐教师，也是数合唱团的指挥。1839年梅逊（Lowell Mason）将此曲调重编。
