诗歌背景：
一八七三年，芬妮在辛辛那提一个富商家中小住。辛辛那提是芬妮巡回讲道其中一站，那富商就是杜恩。他们忙了半天，黄昏时分退到杜恩的房子休息，两人不经意谈到与神亲近的经验，芬妮越说越有兴致，临睡前受感写就一首诗。翌日早上芬妮把新写的诗念给杜恩听，杜恩马上为诗谱曲，诗歌《我乃属耶稣》就此诞生。
芬妮与杜恩合写诗歌不少，他们的同工可说是祷告的果子：某天黄昏，杜恩在旅馆房间祷告，求神赐他一首诗作为一家教会周年志庆之用。他祷告不久，听见叩门的声音，一个侍者给他递进一封信。
寄信人是芬妮·卡洛斯比，信里写道：“杜恩先生尊鉴，敬启者：你我素未谋面，惟我深感要将一诗寄予阁下，请祈纳，盼为神所用。”杜恩与芬妮合写的第一首诗歌《更像主耶稣》就此诞生，而一段经历四十七载的友情亦就此展开。
