诗歌背景：
德斐德，一八一八年九月十二日生于宾西法尼亚州卡莱尔，蒙召成为牧师，一八五八年四月登上费城长老会圣堂讲坛，以《基督精兵》（以弗所书6：14所以要站稳了，用真理当作带子束腰，用公义当作护心镜遮胸。）为题讲道，悼念他刚刚遭祸的好友丁达礼。丁达礼是个灵力充沛的年轻牧师，他出事前几天，曾以《你们这壮年人去事奉耶和华》（出埃及记10：11不可都去，你们这壮年人去侍奉耶和华吧！因为这是你们所求的。”于是，把他们从法老面前撵出去。）为题讲道，吸引了五千多人赴会，其中一千多人献身归主。讲道几天后，他遭遇意外，手臂被卷进一座脱壳机，最后虽然逃离险境，却因失血过多重伤不治。弥留之际，丁达礼对围绕病榻的亲友同工说：“让我们奋起为耶稣！”
